Why Swami's should wear black dress during ayyappa swamy diksha

 Om Sri Swamiye- Saranam Ayyappa

Persons who take ayyappa swamy diksha should compulsorily wear only black clothes. There is a reason for this. Swamy has given word to shani deva that all his devotees will wear the black color dress which is a favorite color of shani deva. The following conversation between swamy and shani deva in the above video is given below.

Swamy: O Shani! Why are you troubling the humans for seven years.
Shani: That is my dharma (duty) swamy.

Swamy: Is troubling humans also a dharma(duty).
Shani: For Trimurthi's- Srusti(generation),stithi(operation),laya(destruction) are dharamas, for yama taking the lives of living beings is dharma, what can I say if you ask "is it dharma(right) in the taking lives as part of laya(destruction) process"

Swamy: What will happen if you dont perform your dharma (duty)
Shani: Shrusti dharma will become topsy turvy.

Swamy: shrusti dharma should not become troubling of humans. Shrusti has been designed and created for the purpose of giving sukha(comforts), santosha(happiness), ananda(bliss), utsava(energetic) for beings.

Shani: Vidhata (creator or lord brahma) is writing the destiny of living beings based on their evil/good actions in their various births. so it is pre-destined that they should undergo all these troubles or sufferings, as a result of their previous evil actions.

Swamy: So the inner meaning of your troubling the humans is that they should undergo these sufferings as a result of their previous evil actions.
Shani: Otherwise what is the necessity or interest or benefit to me in this duty swamy.

Swamy: O Shani! My devotees will undergo all those sufferings in 41 days, which usually you make them suffer within the span of 7 years.
Shani: Oh Swamy What can they undergo in just 41 days, the troubles which I make them to undergo are huge in number. I trouble people who eat lavishly, because of which they dont get proper food at the right time and get suffered because of hunger.

Swamy: My devotees will eat only once a day that too eat only satwik food(food that is very normal without any spices etc).
Shani: I make people who sleep on greatest of beds and mattresses to sleep on hard wooden planks and ordinary beds.

swamy: they will leave all the comforts and sleep on bare floor without any mats/beds/mattresses.

Shani: I will make people to forget all the scents/freshners/fragrant oils/ hot water showers etc used during baths and make them shiver.

Swamy: My devotees will instead of scented hot showers will do cold water bath twice a day during sunrise and sunset.
shani: I will make humans to suffer so that they wont have a proper dress to wear, forget about the care taking of their hair, nails, doesnt have proper footwear to wear, will come to such a down stage where he will feel shy and inconvienient to tell about himself and  roam in despair.

Swamy: Your favorite color is black. My devotees wearing black clothes, leaving foot wear (with bare foot), forgetting the care taking of their nails and hair, by wearing mala and taking diksha, forgetting their own identity are called as swamy's. Whatever the sufferings you told, they will undergo those sufferings as part of rules of diksha with devotion and happiness.

Are you happy!.

shani: Swamy! one more important thing. By the mere glance of my vision, those couples who are happy and in love will become disinterested in each other.

Swamy: My devotees will follow the brahmacharya, and by chanting swamiye saranam ayyappa, they travel  by walk in the dense forests and come for my darshan. You should never trouble such devotees of mine. you should always bestow them with all the good things in life. This is my order.

Shani: you are an avatar (embodiment) of dharma. To follow your order is my principle duty.

Thus those devotees who are taking ayyappa swamy diksha should always wear only black dress during their diksha time, but not any other color.

 Om Sri Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa.

Pathinettam Padi (18 Holy Steps) of Sabarimala

Pathinettam Padi (18 Holy Steps) and the Significance of the 18 Steps

Before one views the Sanctum Sanctorum of sabarimala ayyappa swamy, one has to climb over eighteen sacred steps. These eighteen steps are called as pathinettam padi or easily referred to as padi. These steps are now covered with `Panchaloham’ (a special composition of gold, silver, copper, iron and tin). Pilgrims initiate their ascent up the Pathinettam Padi by placing their right foot on the first step. The symbolism of these 18 steps is as follows:-

The first five steps symbolise the five human senses (Panchendriyas) i.e. visual (vision), auditory (hearing), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) and tactile (touch). These signify the `mortal’ nature of one’s body.

The next eight steps symbolise the eight Ashtaragas viz, Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Maltsarya, Asooya, Dhumb (Love, Anger, Avarice, Lust, Pride, Unhealthy Competition, Jealousy and Boastfulness).

The next three steps stand for three Gunas or Thrigunas (nature-born qualities) i.e. Satva, ( perspicuity, discernment) , Rajas (activity, enjoyment) and Thamas (inactivity, stupor).

The last two steps represent Vidya (Knowledge) and Avidya (Ignorance).

It is assumed that after climbing up these eighteen steps reverently, one symbolically detaches oneself from all the worldly ties that bind one physically and mentally to the world . It is only then that a person will be in a receptive condition to be `one’ in consonance with the concept of ‘The Ultimate Creator. The same will be written on the sanctum Sanctorum namely "Tatvamasi".

The details given above represent the most prevalently accepted version of the significance of the Holy Pathinettam Padi. Other versions are:-

Ayyappa was a master of 18 weapons and the steps signify these.

Ayyappa before merging into the idol at the Sanctum Sanctorum, surrendered his 18 weapons, one at each step of Pathinettam Padi.

The steps represent the 18 hills existing in and around the region of Sabarimala.

Pathinettapadi (18 divine steps) to the sanctum sanctorium is divine in all aspects. Initially the 18 steps were made of granite. It was later covered with Panchaloha in the year 1985 to prevent it from deterioration. As per the tradition, ONLY those who undertake the penance (known as diksha)  for 41 days and those who carry the IRUMUDI on their head are allowed to use the steps. The significance of irumudi has swamy to present in the form of coconut, which the swami's carry on their head while climbing the pathinettapadi.

Eighteen is considered as the code number to break into the soul of the Nature. The significance of 18 can be traced back to the Vedic age. The first Veda, believed to be protected by Lord Brahma himself, had 18 chapters. Later, Veda Vyasa divided it to create the four vedas: Rigveda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharava Veda. Each of these vedas had 18 chapters.Veda Vyasa also wrote 18 puranas and 18 upa-puranas. The Bhagavad Gita has 18 chapters and the Kurukshetra war lasted 18 days

There are many mythological stories associated with the holy Patinettampadi.

Some believe the eighteen steps denotes the 18 puranas.
Othere believe it represents the 18 mountains in the Sabarimala region: Ponnambalamedu, Gowdenmala, Nagamala, Sundaramala, Chittambalamala, Khalgimala, Mathangamala, Myladummala, Sreepadamala, Devarmala, Nilakkalmala, Thalapparamala, Neelimala, Karimala, Puthuserrymala, Kalakettimala, Inchipparamala and Sabarimala
Others are of the belief that the first five steps denotes the indriyas (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin). The next eight steps signifies the ragas (tatwa, kama, krodha, moha, lobha, madha, matsraya, and ahamkara. The next three steps signifies the gunas (satwa, rajas and thamas). The seventeenth and the eighteenth denotes vidhya and avidya (ignorance).
The first three steps depict “Bhoomi, Agni, Vayoo & Akash”, 6 to 9 steps for Karmendriya, 10 to 15 for Jhanandriya, 16th for mind 17th Intelligence and 18th Jeevathma Bhava. Those who cross all these steps are believed to achieve “Punyadarshan”.
Some say that 18 weapons with which Lord Ayyappa destroyed the evil denotes the 18 steps.

The steep steps are so important and holy that no one can climb them without fasting for 41 days and carrying the holy irrumudi on ones’ head.

Before ascending or descending the steps, pilgrims break coconut as an offering to the steps. One needs to have the sacre Irumudi on head while going up or down the 18 steps. While descending the steps the devotees climb down backwards facing the sanctum sanctorum.

One who climbs the Patinettampadi for 18 times shall plant coconut sapling in Sabarimala.

Built on a plateau about 40 feet high, the Ayyappan temple commands a lofty view of the mountains and valleys all around. The ancient temple has been rebuilt after a fire in 1950. Within the confines of the sanctum sanctorium with a copper-plated roof and four golden finials at the top, two mandapams, the belikalpura which houses the altar, the flag-staff replacing the earlier stone image of the deity, sits a beautiful idol of Ayyappa in panchaloha, an alloy of five metals, about one and a half feet tall.
